Image compressor: reduce image file size

Compress JPG, PNG and WebP images in your browser. Set the quality, optionally limit the width, compare each image before and after, and download single files or a ZIP of the whole batch.

Lower = smaller files. 70–80% is a good balance.
PNG files are saved as WebP unless you choose JPG, because PNG is lossless.

    How to compress images

    1. Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP images into the upload area.
    2. Set the quality. 70–80% usually looks identical to the original at a fraction of the size.
    3. Choose an output format and, if the images are very large, a maximum width such as 1920 px.
    4. Click Compress images, compare the before and after previews, then download each file or all as a ZIP.

How this image compressor reduces file size

Most photos are saved with more detail than the eye can see on a screen. Re-encoding them at a sensible quality level removes that invisible detail and can cut the file size in half or more. Resizing oversized photos, for example a 6000-pixel phone picture going on a blog, saves even more, because the file holds far fewer pixels.

PNG is a lossless format, so it can’t be compressed by lowering quality. By default this tool saves PNGs as WebP, which supports transparency and is usually much smaller, or you can choose JPG. If an image is already well optimised and the new version would be bigger, the tool keeps your original and tells you so. You always see the exact original size, new size and percentage for every file.

    Image compressor FAQ

    Will compressed images look worse?

At 70–85% quality most people can’t see a difference. Use the before and after previews to check, and raise the quality if needed.

Is my photo’s location data removed?

Yes. Re-encoded images don’t include the original metadata such as GPS location or camera details.

    Why can’t I choose WebP?

Some browsers, mainly older Safari versions, can’t create WebP images. In that case the tool uses JPG instead.

How many images can I compress at once?

There is no fixed limit. Each image can be up to 40 MB, and large batches work best on a computer.
