How to compare two texts
- Paste the original text on the left and the changed text on the right.
- Choose how to compare: by words for prose, by lines for code and lists, or by characters for short strings.
- Optionally ignore differences in capitalisation or extra spaces.
- Click Compare texts and review the highlighted result and the summary.
How the diff checker works
The tool finds the longest sequence of parts the two texts share, then marks everything else as added or removed. Added text is highlighted in green with a “+” in line mode, and removed text is shown struck through in red with a “−”, so differences are clear even without colour. The summary counts added, removed and unchanged words, lines or characters.
Word mode is best for documents and articles because a single edit doesn’t flag a whole line. Line mode works like a code review and is ideal for configuration files, CSV data and lists. The comparison runs locally, so you can safely compare contracts, code or private drafts.
Common uses
- Checking what an editor or colleague changed in a draft.
- Comparing two versions of a contract or policy.
- Spotting differences between configuration files or code snippets.
- Verifying that copied text matches the original.
Text diff checker FAQ
Can it compare very long documents?
Yes for most documents. Very long texts that are almost completely different may be too heavy for word mode, and the tool will suggest line mode instead.
Does it compare formatting like bold or fonts?
No. It compares plain text only. Formatting is removed when you paste.
What does “Ignore extra spaces” do?
It treats several spaces or tabs as one and ignores spaces at the start and end, so only real wording changes are shown.
