How to create a URL slug
- Type or paste a page title. Put several titles on separate lines to convert them all.
- Choose a separator and options: lowercase, convert accents, keep numbers, remove stop words.
- Optionally set a maximum length; the slug is cut at a word boundary.
- Copy the slug and paste it into your CMS.
What makes a good slug?
A slug is the readable part of a URL after the domain, like best-coffee-shops-sao-paulo. Good slugs are short, lowercase, use hyphens between words and describe the page clearly. They are easier to read and share, look trustworthy in search results and stay valid when copied into emails or chat apps.
This slug generator removes apostrophes so “don’t” becomes dont, converts accented and special letters (é, ñ, ü, ß, ø, æ, ł) to plain equivalents, and turns symbols like & into “and”. Anything else that isn’t a letter or number becomes a separator, and repeated separators are merged. Letters from non-Latin scripts are kept, since modern browsers display them correctly.
Slug tips
- Use hyphens rather than underscores: search engines treat hyphens as word separators.
- Keep slugs to a few meaningful words; three to six is often enough.
- Avoid dates in slugs for content you plan to update.
- Don’t change slugs of published pages without setting up a redirect.
Slug generator FAQ
Should I remove stop words?
It can shorten slugs, but keep them if removing them changes the meaning. The tool keeps at least one word even if all are stop words.
Can I keep capital letters?
Yes, untick Lowercase. Most sites use lowercase because some servers treat upper and lower case URLs as different pages.
Does it work for non-English titles?
Yes. Accents are simplified and other scripts such as Arabic, Cyrillic or Chinese characters are kept as they are.
