JPG vs PNG: what changes
JPG uses lossy compression designed for photographs, which keeps files small. PNG is lossless, which means it stores every pixel exactly and never adds new compression artefacts when you edit and save again. Converting JPG to PNG doesn’t remove artefacts that are already in the photo, but it stops them getting worse in later edits. It also makes the image ready for editing tools that work best with PNG, such as when you plan to add transparency or text.
Because PNG is lossless, the converted file is usually larger than the JPG, sometimes several times larger. That is normal, and the tool shows the size change for every file so there are no surprises. Each image is decoded and re-saved by your browser, and its orientation is corrected automatically.
When PNG is the better format
- You will edit the image several times and want to avoid repeated quality loss.
- You need to add transparency later in a design tool.
- A website or app only accepts PNG uploads.
- Screenshots, diagrams and images with text, where PNG keeps edges crisp.
JPG to PNG FAQ
Will converting to PNG improve quality?
No. It preserves the quality the JPG already has but can’t restore detail lost when the JPG was created.
Does the PNG have a transparent background?
JPGs have no transparency, so the PNG keeps the original background. Use an editor to remove a background if you need transparency.
Why is my PNG so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression. For smaller files with transparency, try WebP with our WebP Converter.
