How to crop an image
- Upload an image. A crop box appears in the middle.
- Choose an aspect ratio, or leave it on Free. Pick Custom to type your own ratio, such as 5:7.
- Drag the box to move it, or drag a corner handle to resize. On a keyboard, focus the box and use the arrow keys to nudge it (hold Shift for bigger steps).
- Check the preview and size, optionally set an output width, then click Crop & download.
Precise cropping in your browser
The preview shows exactly what you will get, along with the final dimensions in pixels. Cropping is calculated from the full-resolution image, not the smaller version on screen, so you keep every pixel of detail inside the selection. Setting an output width resizes the cropped area in one step, which is handy for avatars and thumbnails that need a specific size.
Ratios cover the most common needs: 1:1 for profile pictures and product photos, 4:5 for Instagram portrait posts, 9:16 for stories and phone wallpapers, and 16:9 for videos, slides and website banners. The image cropper runs on your device using the Canvas API.
Good uses for cropping
- Removing distracting edges or people from a photo.
- Making square product images for an online shop.
- Framing a headshot for a CV or LinkedIn profile.
- Cutting a screenshot down to the part that matters.
Image cropper FAQ
Does cropping reduce quality?
No. The pixels inside the crop are kept at full resolution. Only saving as JPG adds light compression, at a high 92% quality.
Can I crop to an exact pixel size?
Choose the matching aspect ratio, then enter the width in “Output width”. The height is calculated to keep the ratio.
Is transparency kept?
Yes, when you save as PNG or WebP. JPG doesn’t support transparency, so transparent areas become white.
