How to use the WebP converter
- Upload your images: WebP, JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP.
- Choose the output format: WebP to make images smaller, or JPG/PNG to convert WebP files back.
- Adjust the quality for WebP or JPG. For JPG you can also set a background colour for transparent areas.
- Click Convert and download individual files or a ZIP.
Why WebP?
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that supports both lossy and lossless compression, plus transparency. At similar visual quality, WebP images are typically around 25–35% smaller than JPGs, and much smaller than PNGs with transparency. Smaller images mean faster page loads, which improves the experience for visitors on mobile data.
Not every program supports WebP yet. Older photo editors, some email clients and certain upload forms only accept JPG or PNG, which is when converting WebP back is useful. The converter shows the exact size and percentage change for each file. Note that some browsers, mainly older versions of Safari, can’t create WebP files; you will see a clear message if yours can’t.
Typical uses
- Converting website images to WebP to improve page speed.
- Turning WebP images saved from the web into JPGs you can edit or print.
- Shrinking transparent PNG logos and icons.
- Preparing images for platforms that require a specific format.
